PRE-TASK

The teacher writes on the board this as a title “ CHANGE 4 LIFE” and makes sts predict what this can be about. After many speculations we conclude it can be related to healthy habits in life.

TASK 1

Sts watch a short tv commercial created by Aardman * downloaded from www.YouTube and spot:

1. the contrast between past and present life
2. the reason why there is too much fat on that body
3. 2 ways to make a positive change in our lives

After pooling all the answers together, I want to reflect on the commercial as a genre:

- why does it last only a minute and a half? To be effective.
- have they ever seen any other where the characters are made of “plasticine”? Wallace & Gromit
- is it colourful? why? to attract people`s attention.

And as to interculturality,

- where does it take place? England because of the double-decker and there`s a gate to get into the park ( not here in Argentina)
- even though this happens somewhere in the U.K. does it affect us? Yes!!!!bad eating habits and lack of exercise is killing people.

*(Aardman Animations, Ltd., also known as Aardman Studios, or simply as Aardman, is a British animation studio based in Bristol, United Kingdom. The studio is known for films made using stop-motion clay animation techniques, particularly those featuring Plasticine characters Wallace and Gromit. However, it successfully entered the computer animation market with Flushed Away (2006).)

TASK 2

As sts can deal with vocabulary related to food and drink they will make a T- chart to separate healthy food from junk food. Sts will get the lexical items from a free source tool called “ WORDLE” powered by java. In pairs they compare their choices and account for them. But this activity will lead to discuss why certain food is considered healthy or not. After this, sts need to know more about the elements or components.

Wordle: Untitled

TASK 3

Now sts will read about the seven elements in food and their relevance to our bodies and the importance to have a balanced diet. To deal better with the information in the text individually or in pairs sts will make a mind map with the programme IHCM CMAPS .

( “Cambridge English Worldwide” Student`s book one by Andrew Littlejohn & Diana Hicks Cambridge University Press 1998 )

TASK 4

After publishing their mind maps we come to the conclusion we must do something to change or improve our food habits. Besides, we realize that variety is the key concept for choosing our food. Sts get in groups and decide on healthy meals: breakfast, lunch or dinner; they can also include snacks ( so common amongs teens!!!) . During this task teacher`s role will be facilitator for the necessary language but the teacher will also monitor the proper use of the language required:

“ …in pizza there are carbohydrates but there´s also protein in cheese … and we can prepare a lettuce and tomato salad!!!”

FINAL TASK

So we can do a campaign to get to all the sts at school revise their nutrition and exercise. Sts think about different ways to do so : posters, leaflets, a powerpoint with some advice, writing a letter or sending an mail to the school authorities for them to check what they can buy at the school canteen or sweetshop. By this time, sts have already involved in discussing and analyzing different ways to give advice and use them according to the different genres they choose: in a powerpoint they use short and clear chunks; in the letter to the authorities they change into a formal register; in the posters and leaflets they pay attention to key words to attract people`s attention.
